Deepak Chahar, born on August 7, 1992, is an Indian cricketer who has established himself as a prominent figure in international cricket. He is known for his right-arm medium pace swing bowling and represents the Rajasthan cricket team in domestic cricket and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
A significant milestone in Chahar's career came in 2019 when he became the first Indian male cricketer to take a hat-trick in a Twenty20 International (T20I) match. His exceptional performance earned him the T20I Performance of the Year award from the International Cricket Council (ICC) in January 2020. This recognition was due to his remarkable figures of six wickets for seven runs against Bangladesh.
Chahar was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, to Lokendra Singh Chahar, a retired Indian Air Force personnel, and Pushpa Chahar, a homemaker. He has an elder sibling, Malti Chahar, who is a Bollywood film actress. In 2021, Chahar made headlines by proposing to his girlfriend, Jaya Bhardwaj, during the 2021 IPL season. The couple got married on June 1, 2022, in Agra.
Chahar's journey in domestic cricket began with a bang when he took eight wickets for 10 runs on his first-class debut for Rajasthan in the 2010–11 Ranji Trophy. He was also part of the Rising Pune Supergiants team in the IPL before being picked up by Chennai Super Kings in 2018. His performances earned him recognition and a spot in the India B squad for the Deodhar Trophy in 2018.
In terms of international cricket, Chahar made his T20I debut for India in July 2018 against England. He later made his One Day International (ODI) debut during the 2018 Asia Cup against Afghanistan. His notable performances include taking three wickets for four runs against West Indies in a T20I match and achieving six wickets for seven runs against Bangladesh, setting a new record for best bowling figures in a men's T20I match. He also recorded the first T20I hat-trick for India during the same series.
Chahar's contributions extended to the ODI format as well, where he scored his maiden half-century against Sri Lanka. He was named as a reserve player in India's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup and continued to make valuable contributions in various matches.
