Male Cricketer
Varun Chakravarthy Vinod, born on 29 August 1991, is an Indian cricketer known for his leg spin bowling abilities. He represents Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Chakravarthy made his international debut for the India cricket team in July 2021, marking a significant step in his cricket career.
Born as Chakravarthy Ambig in Bidar, Karnataka, he completed his schooling in Chennai at Kendriya Vidyalaya CLRI and St. Patrick's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. He pursued a bachelor's degree in architecture from SRM University before choosing to follow his passion for cricket by becoming a professional player at the age of 25.
Chakravarthy's cricket journey began with his List A debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy in September 2018. He showcased his prowess by emerging as the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu in the tournament. He made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, further solidifying his presence in the domestic cricket circuit.
In the IPL, Chakravarthy made headlines when he was bought by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) for a substantial sum of 8.4 crores in the 2019 auction. He made his Twenty20 debut for the team and exhibited his talent despite a challenging first over. Later, he was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2020 IPL auction and became a significant contributor to the team's bowling attack.
His notable performances earned him a call-up to India's T20I squad for the series against Australia in October 2020. However, an injury prevented him from making his international debut at that time. He eventually made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka in July 2021, taking a wicket in his very first match.
Chakravarthy's cricket journey also includes his participation in the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, where he was named in India's squad. Beyond cricket, he made a cameo appearance in a Tamil-language sports drama film called "Jeeva" and tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend Neha Khedekar in December 2020.
Chakravarthy's journey from an architecture graduate to a successful cricketer is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport. His leg spin skills and contributions to domestic and IPL cricket have paved the way for his international career, making him a promising asset for Indian cricket's future.
