Namboori Thakur Tilak Varma, born on 8 November 2002, is a promising Indian international cricketer known for his contributions as a left-handed batsman and part-time offspin bowler. He is associated with Hyderabad in domestic cricket and the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Tilak Varma's cricket journey began in Hyderabad, where he developed an early interest in the sport. He honed his skills at the Legala Cricket Academy, mentored by Salam Bayash. He pursued his education at Crescent Model English School and later studied at SriLepakshi Junior College in Hyderabad. Currently, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Andhra University.
In domestic cricket, he made his mark by making his first-class debut for Hyderabad in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy. He also participated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy, showcasing his skills as both a batsman and bowler. He was selected for India's squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he gained valuable experience.
Tilak Varma's IPL journey began when he was bought by the Mumbai Indians in the 2022 auction for a significant sum. He impressed in the league with notable performances, including a 33-ball-61 in a match against Rajasthan Royals and an 84 off 46 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2023.
His international debut came in August 2023 when he represented the Indian cricket team in a T20I series against West Indies. In his debut match, he scored 39 runs and showcased his fielding skills by taking two catches. He continued to make an impact, scoring his maiden international fifty with 51 runs in the second T20 match against West Indies.
Tilak Varma's consistent performances earned him spots in the Indian squads for various international tours and events, including T20Is against Ireland and the Asian Games in China.
