Vidyut Jamwal, born on December 10, 1980, is an Indian actor, martial artist, and film producer who primarily works in Hindi films. He is well-known for his roles in the Commando film series and is recognized for his expertise in the martial art form of Kalaripayattu. Jamwal has also made appearances in Telugu and Tamil films, initially portraying negative roles before transitioning to lead roles.
Born in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India, Vidyut Jammwal is the son of an Army officer and grew up in different parts of India due to his father's job transfers. At the age of three, he began training in Kalaripayattu, a traditional Indian martial art form, at an ashram in Palakkad, Kerala, which was run by his mother. He further honed his skills by traveling to various countries and training with martial artists in different forms, some of which are influenced by Kalaripayattu. Jammwal has performed in live action shows in over 25 countries.
Jammwal made his Bollywood debut in 2011 with the film "Force," alongside John Abraham, which was a remake of the Tamil film "Kaakha Kaakha." He portrayed a negative role in the movie and received several awards for Best Male Debut, including the Filmfare Award. In the same year, he appeared in negative roles in the Telugu films "Shakti" and "Oosaravelli."
In 2012, Jammwal made his Tamil film debut with "Billa II," where he played the antagonist opposite Ajith Kumar. The film earned him critical acclaim. He also portrayed the antagonist in the blockbuster film "Thuppakki" alongside Vijay, for which he received the SIIMA Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role.
The turning point in Jammwal's acting career came with the Hindi film "Commando" in 2013, where he played the protagonist. Known for his real-world combat-based action sequences performed without the aid of stuntmen, Jammwal gained international recognition through the film. He was praised by international media and action directors, often being referred to as India's answer to Bruce Lee and Tony Jaa. The success of "Commando" led to his appearances in films like "Bullett Raja," "Anjaan," "Commando 2," and "Baadshaho."
In 2019, Jammwal starred in American director Chuck Russell's Bollywood film "Junglee" and returned to the Commando series with "Commando 3," which became the most successful film in the franchise. He also appeared in Tigmanshu Dhulia's film "Yaara," an official remake of the French film "Les Lyonnais." Additionally, Jammwal starred in the action thriller "Khuda Haafiz" in 2020, inspired by real-life events, which became his biggest opener. A sequel, "Khuda Haafiz Chapter II," was announced with the same leads. He also played the lead role in the film "Sanak."
Jammwal has been featured in various popular magazine lists, including The Times of India's "India's Top 10 Most Desirable Men," Men's Health's "List of Best Bodies" and "Top 5 Fittest Men," and People Magazine India's "Sexiest Men Alive." In 2014, he was honored as PETA's Hottest Vegetarian alongside Kangana Ranaut. Additionally, he has been recognized as one of the "Top 6 Martial Artists Around The World."
