Suresh Oberoi, born on December 17, 1946, is an Indian actor and politician known for his work in Hindi films. He received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1987. Oberoi began his career in radio shows and modeling before making his mark in Bollywood as a popular character actor in the 1980s and 1990s. He is also the father of actor Vivek Oberoi.
Born in Quetta, British India (now in Pakistan), Oberoi's family moved to India after partition and settled in Hyderabad. He attended St. George's Grammar School in Hyderabad and was active in sports, excelling in tennis and swimming. After his father's death, he and his brother took over the family's chain of medical stores. Oberoi is fluent in several languages, including Pashto, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, English, Telugu, and Tamil.
Oberoi's career in entertainment began in the early 1970s with radio shows and stage plays. He later attended the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. His modeling work and radio show experience helped him establish connections in the industry. He became a popular model in the late 1970s, appearing in advertisements for Charminar cigarettes and Lifebuoy soaps.
In 1977, Suresh Oberoi made his film debut with "Jeevan Mukt." While he played lead roles in films like "Ek Baar Phir" (1980), they were not commercially successful. However, his career gained momentum when he took on character roles in successful films like "Kartavya," "Ek Baar Kaho," "Surraksha," and "Khanjar" between 1979 and 1980.
He gained national recognition for his supporting role as Police Inspector Sharma in the 1980 film "Phir Wahi Raat," directed by Danny Denzongpa and starring Rajesh Khanna. This role established him as a go-to actor for police inspector characters in future films. Oberoi received a nomination for Filmfare Best Actor in Supporting Role for his performance in "Laawaris" (1981).
Suresh Oberoi's notable performances in small supporting roles that made a significant impact came in films like "Namak Halal," "Kaamchor," and "Vidhata." He also starred in lead roles, such as in B. R. Chopra's "Mazdoor" (1983) alongside Dilip Kumar. His memorable performance as a police inspector came in the film "Awaaz" (1984), where he received a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Mirch Masala" (1985).
Throughout the 1980s and early 2000s, Suresh Oberoi continued to appear in numerous films, averaging four to five films per year. He acted in a wide range of genres and received appreciation from the audience for his performances in films like "Tezaab," "Parinda," "Raja Hindustani," "Gadar Ek Prem Katha," and "Lajja," among others.
Aside from his film career, Oberoi has also appeared in television shows such as "Dhadkan" and "Kashmeer." He hosted the second season of the talk show "Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai," which was previously hosted by Farooque Shaikh.
