Producer
Rajkumar Hirani, born on November 20, 1962, is a renowned Indian filmmaker, director, producer, and editor known for his work in Hindi cinema. He has received numerous accolades, including four National Film Awards and eleven Filmfare Awards. Hirani is widely regarded as one of the most successful filmmakers in Indian cinema.
Hirani began his career as a film editor after graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in the editing field. However, after a disappointing experience, he shifted to working on ad films, where he found success in creating several notable advertisements. He edited his first feature film, "Mission Kashmir" (2000), for director Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Despite his desire to make his own films, Hirani took a one-year break and returned with the script for "Munna Bhai MBBS," which he approached Chopra for financing. Chopra decided to produce the film himself, and it was released in 2003, garnering critical acclaim and commercial success. "Munna Bhai MBBS" won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film, and earned Hirani his first Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay, as well as a nomination for Best Director.
Following the success of "Munna Bhai MBBS," Hirani directed the sequel, "Lage Raho Munna Bhai" (2006), which became the second highest-grossing film of the year. He then directed the coming-of-age drama "3 Idiots" (2009), which won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and received nominations for Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Director at the Filmfare Awards. "3 Idiots" went on to become the highest-grossing Indian film at that time. Hirani's next films were the science fiction religious satire "PK" (2014) and the biographical drama "Sanju" (2018), both of which received critical acclaim and commercial success. "PK" became the highest-grossing Indian film at the time of its release, and "Sanju" also performed exceptionally well at the box office. Both films were nominated for Best Film and Best Director at the Filmfare Awards, with "PK" winning the Best Screenplay award. Currently, both films rank among the top ten highest-grossing Bollywood films domestically.
Hirani is the founder of the production house Rajkumar Hirani Films, and his upcoming film is titled "Dunki" with Shah Rukh Khan.
