Rohinton Soli "Ronnie" Screwvala, born on September 8, 1956, is an Indian entrepreneur who has made significant contributions to the media, entertainment, and education sectors.
Screwvala has garnered recognition and accolades for his influence and impact. He was named on Esquire's List of the 75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century and ranked 78 among the 100 most influential people in the world on the Time 100 compiled by Time Magazine in 2009. Fortune Magazine also listed him among 25 of Asia's Most Powerful People.
Based in Mumbai, India, Screwvala played a pioneering role in the development of cable television in India. He went on to build a successful Media and Entertainment conglomerate known as UTV Software Communications. The company partnered with prominent global entities such as News Corp, 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company, and Bloomberg. In 2012, Screwvala divested the company to Disney for an enterprise value of US$1.4 billion.
In 2013, Screwvala and his wife focused their efforts on scaling their non-profit organization, The Swades Foundation. The foundation aims to uplift rural communities in India by empowering them and helping them move out of poverty within a 6-7 year timeframe before transitioning to another region.
Screwvala has co-founded UpGrad, an online education platform specializing in higher education and skill development. He also established a sports company called U Sports, which encompasses football, e-sports, and kabaddi. In addition, he re-entered the media content space with RSVP, a creative content company that focuses on movies and digital content.
As an author, Screwvala penned a book titled "Dream with Your Eyes Open." He has also been an active investor in Indian start-ups through his investment company, Unilazer Ventures, providing early-stage funding and acquiring significant minority stakes.
