Sithara Krishnakumar is a versatile Indian artist who works as a playback singer, composer, lyricist, classical dancer, and occasional actor. While she predominantly works in Malayalam cinema, she has also contributed to Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films. Sithara is known for her expertise in Hindustani and Carnatic classical music, as well as her skills as a ghazal singer.
She has received recognition and several awards for her talent, including three Kerala State Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. Sithara has traveled extensively, performing in concerts and stage shows worldwide. Apart from classical music, she also has a keen interest in folk and fusion genres. She has collaborated with popular musical bands in Kerala and has been part of international shows.
In 2014, Sithara formed a musical band called Eastraga, which focuses on female-oriented songs supported by a team of renowned musicians. She is also a member of the six-member band called Sithara's Project Malabaricus, which presents a contemporary blend of folk and classical songs.
Born into a family with a strong inclination towards classical arts, Sithara was introduced to music at a young age and started singing when she was just four years old. She received training in Carnatic music from Sri Ramanattukara Satheesan Master and Palai CK Ramachandran. She also received extensive education in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Fiyaz Khan. Additionally, she is a trained classical dancer under Kalamandalam Vinodini.
Sithara's career began as a dancer, and she later ventured into playback singing. Her debut as a playback singer came in 2007 with the song "Pammi Pammi" in the Malayalam film Athishayan. Before that, she had won several musical talent shows, including Asianet Saptha Swarangal, Kairali TV Gandharva Sangeetham, and Jeevan TV Voice.
She has collaborated with esteemed composers like Ouseppachan, M. Jayachandran, G. V. Prakash Kumar, Prashant Pillai, Gopi Sundar, Bijibal, and Shaan Rahman. Sithara has lent her voice to over 300 film songs in various languages.
In 2017, she made her debut as a composer with the single "Ente Akasham," which she also wrote. She composed the music for the film Udalaazham alongside Mithun Jayaraj, under the banner of Doctor's Dilemma, a collective that includes her husband, Dr. Sajish M. She has also made a cameo appearance in the Malayalam film Ganagandharvan, directed by Ramesh Pisharody.
