Arunima Sinha is an inspirational Indian mountaineer and sportswoman who has achieved remarkable feats in the world of mountaineering. She holds the distinction of being the world's first female amputee to conquer several renowned peaks, including Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, Mount Kosciuszko, Mount Aconcagua, Mount Denali, and Mount Vinson.
A tragic incident in 2011 changed Arunima's life when she was pushed from a running train by robbers while resisting them. The incident resulted in severe injuries, including multiple fractures in her spinal cord and rods being pushed into her left leg.
Despite facing immense challenges, Arunima was determined to pursue her dreams. Her goal was to climb the highest peaks on each continent and proudly hoist the Indian flag. By 2014, she had already conquered seven peaks, including Mount Everest in Asia, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Elbrus in Europe, Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, Mount Aconcagua in South America, and Mount Denali in North America. She completed her final summit of Mount Vinson in Antarctica on 1st January 2019.
Arunima's extraordinary achievements have garnered recognition and admiration worldwide. In 2015, she was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Government of India, which is the fourth highest civilian award in the country.
Born in Akbarpur, Ambedkar Nagar near Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Arunima hailed from a family with a military background. Her father served in the Indian Army, and her mother worked as a supervisor in the health department. Arunima was passionate about sports and excelled in football and volleyball. She aspired to join the paramilitary forces and had received a call letter from the CISF. However, her life took a tragic turn during her journey to Delhi when she encountered the life-changing accident.
Despite the adversity she faced, Arunima demonstrated immense resilience and determination. Her indomitable spirit and unwavering focus on her goals have made her an inspiration for countless individuals around the world. She continues to motivate and empower others with her incredible journey of triumph over adversity.
