Runachalam Muruganantham, also known as Padman, is a social entrepreneur hailing from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, India. He is renowned for inventing a low-cost sanitary pad-making machine that has revolutionized menstrual hygiene practices in rural areas of India. His innovative approach has generated awareness and addressed the unhygienic practices surrounding menstruation in these communities.
Muruganantham's invention, the mini sanitary pad-making machines, can manufacture sanitary pads at a significantly lower cost compared to commercial pads. These machines have been installed in rural areas across 23 states in India, reaching communities that previously lacked access to affordable and hygienic menstrual products. He has plans to expand the production and distribution of these machines to 106 countries worldwide, making a global impact.
The significance of Muruganantham's work gained international recognition when the documentary film "Period. End of Sentence." won the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) in 2018. The film highlighted the issue of menstrual hygiene and the social stigma surrounding it, with Muruganantham's contribution playing a central role. Additionally, his story was portrayed in the 2018 Hindi film "Pad Man," where he was portrayed by actor Akshay Kumar.
Muruganantham's remarkable achievements have earned him numerous accolades. He was listed among Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2014, acknowledging his groundbreaking work. In 2016, he was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Government of India for his outstanding contributions to society.
