Ritu Kumar is a renowned Indian fashion designer. She is known for her use of traditional Indian textiles and her fusion of Indian and Western styles. Kumar was born in Amritsar, India in 1944. She studied at Lady Irwin College in Delhi and then went on to study fashion design at Briarcliff College in New York. After graduating, Kumar returned to India and opened her first boutique in Kolkata in 1966.
