Cinematography
Supratim Bhol is an Indian cinematographer known for his work in Hindi and Bengali cinema, as well as in regional language projects in Haryanvi, Odia, and Chhattisgarhi. He graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and made his debut as a cinematographer with the film "Colours of Innocence" (2016), directed by Manas Mukul Pal, which won a National Award. Some of his notable works include "Panchlait," "Avijatrik" (a national award winner), "Aparajito," "Abyakto," "Lomad," and "Dada Lakhmi," all of which received critical acclaim. Supratim won the 68th National Film Award for Best Cinematography.
Born on December 10, 1979, in the Midnapore District of West Bengal, Supratim grew up in a farmer's family. He was educated at St. Xavier's Collegiate School in Kolkata and developed an early interest in art, influenced by the region's famous art form called Patchitra. He pursued studies in theoretical art and photography, learning from mentors like photographer Pranab Basu and Fergusson College in Pune. He later joined the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune to study cinematography.
After completing his education, Supratim embarked on his career, traveling across 23 states of India and working on various short films, corporate films, music videos, advertisements, and documentaries. His debut as a cinematographer was with the film "Sahaj Pather Gappo" (2016) directed by Manas Mukul Pal. The film received attention for its picturesque imagery, earning Supratim a nomination at the Filmfare Awards East in 2017 and eventually winning the National Award.
Supratim's first Hindi feature film was "Panchlait" (2017) directed by Prem Prakash Modi, which had a pan-India release and was selected for the 49th International Film Festival of India. He has collaborated with director Arjun Dutta on films like "Abyakto" (2018), "Guldasta" (2020), and "Shrimati" (2021), receiving critical acclaim for their work together. Another significant project was "Avijatrik" (2020), directed by Subhrajit Mitra, which is a sequel to The Apu Trilogy. The film, produced by Madhur Bhandarkar and Gaurang Jalan, received accolades and won the 2020 European Cinematography Awards. Supratim received the Best Cinematography Award at the 68th National Film Awards in New Delhi for his classical and elegant approach to capturing the script's essence through visuals. He also received the Filmfare Award Bangla and the West Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award for Best Cinematography for his work on "Avijatrik."
In addition to his cinematography work, Supratim has served as an additional cinematographer on several films, including "Khashi Katha" (2013), "Kolkatar King," "Nachom-ia Kumpasar" (2015), "Color Black," and "Basu Paribar" (2019).
