Cinematography
Sudeep Chatterjee is an Indian cinematographer known for his work in Hindi and Bengali films. He has collaborated with renowned directors such as Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Vishal Bharadwaj, Srijit Mukherji, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and Nagesh Kukunoor. Some of his notable works include "Iqbal" (2005), "Chak De India" (2007), "Guzaarish" (2010), "Dhoom 3" (2013), "Chotushkone" (2014), "Bajirao Mastani" (2015), "Padmaavat" (2018), and "Gangubai Kathiawadi" (2022). He has received the National Film Award for Best Cinematography twice, for "Chotushkone" and "Bajirao Mastani."
Sudeep Chatterjee was born and raised in Kolkata. His passion for photography began when his father gifted him a camera after he completed his 10th grade. He initially joined an engineering college but later decided to pursue his interest in cinematography and enrolled at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune.
After graduating from FTII, Chatterjee started his career in Kolkata, working on advertisements and documentaries. His first Hindi film opportunity came with "Bada Din" (1997) directed by Anjan Dutt. He then shifted his base to Mumbai and worked on TV series and commercials before gaining attention for his work in Ram Gopal Verma's "Road" (2002).
Chatterjee's career expanded across different genres, including action, thriller, and drama. He garnered recognition for his work in films like "Lucky: No Time for Love" (2005), "Iqbal" (2005), "Dor" (2006), and "Jaan-E-Mann" (2006). However, his breakthrough came with "Chak De! India" (2007) directed by Shimit Amin. The film's unique visual treatment, with desaturated tones and handheld camera shots, earned him critical acclaim and several awards.
He continued to work on notable projects such as "Kaalpurush" (2008), directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. He collaborated with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on "Guzaarish" (2010), "Bajirao Mastani" (2015), and "Padmaavat" (2018), earning further accolades and awards.
Sudeep Chatterjee is currently working on the period drama "Gangubai Kathiawadi" (2022) directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the highly anticipated film "Brahmastra" (2022) directed by Ayan Mukerji. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Kautik International Student Film Festival.
Throughout his career, Sudeep Chatterjee has showcased his skills as a cinematographer, capturing the essence of each film and contributing to their visual storytelling. His work continues to be celebrated in the Indian film industry.
