Subrat Dutta, born on November 16, 1975, is an Indian actor known for his work in Indian films, particularly in Bollywood and Bengali cinema. He has appeared in notable Bollywood films such as "Talaash," "Tango Charlie," "Zameen," "The Shaukeens," "Rakhcharitra," "Bhootnath Returns," as well as Bengali films like "Chaturanga," "Bibar," and "Jor."
Subrat Dutta was born in the Bankura district of West Bengal and completed his schooling at Bankura Christian Collegiate School. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Zoology from Bankura Sammilani College. Despite coming from a non-filmy background, Subrat initially had no plans to join the film industry. He was preparing for his MBA when he came across an advertisement for a theatre workshop organized by the National School of Drama (NSD) in Berhampore, West Bengal. Intrigued, he decided to join the workshop, which lasted for 40 days and ultimately changed his mind about pursuing a career in acting. He went on to complete his master's degree from NSD and received a scholarship from the Charles Wallace Trust, New Delhi, which allowed him to join the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
Subrat Dutta began his acting career as a theatre artist for the NSD Repertory Company and performed in leading roles in 35 plays before transitioning to films. He also learned dance from Pranati Sengupta and participated in Tagore Dance Drama. While he briefly tried to learn Kathak, he left the training after a few months. Additionally, he has worked in amateur "Jatra" performances.
His silver screen debut was in the Hindi film "Karvaan" directed by Pankaj Butalia in 1999. In the beginning of his career, he worked in television series and gained recognition for his work in the Bengali teleseries "Shudhu Tomari Jonyo." He appeared in episodes of the series "Tehreer... Munshi Premchand Ki" directed by Gulzar, and also in the thriller series "Kagaar" on Sahara One. He later returned to television with Yash Raj Films' series "Powder" in 2010. Subrat simultaneously worked in Bollywood and Bengali cinema, with notable early works including films like "88 Antop Hill" (2003), "Zammen" (2003), and the Bengali film "Swapner Feriwala" (2002).
Subrat Dutta gained recognition for his portrayal of a common man named Biresh in the Bengali film "Bibar" directed by Subrata Sen in 2006. His performance earned him the Best Actor award at the Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema. He went on to deliver notable performances in Bengali films like "Jor" (2008) and "Chaturanga" (2008), showcasing his versatility as an actor. In the Hindi film industry, he played the main antagonist Indrajit in the commercial film "Jor," a remake of the successful Telugu film "Okkadu." He also played supporting roles in films like "Talaash" (2012) and "The Shaukeens" (2014). His performance as an engineer ghost in the hit film "Bhootnath Returns" (2014) and as the villain Bheera in "Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans" (2014) received critical acclaim.
