Director
Sudhir Mishra is an Indian film director and screenwriter known for his notable works such as "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi," "Dharavi," and "Chameli." He has had a career spanning over 30 years and has received recognition for his films from the Government of India, including three National Awards, as well as the Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government.
Mishra was born and raised in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and comes from a family with a background in the film industry. His father, Devendra Nath Mishra, was a founding member of the Lucknow Film Society, and his grandfather, Dwarka Prasad Mishra, served as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.
After spending time with playwright Badal Sircar, Mishra moved to Pune, where he spent time at the Film and Television Institute of India. Although he did not study at the institute himself, his younger brother Sudhanshu Mishra, who was a student there, played a significant role in his cinematic education. Mishra later obtained a Master of Philosophy degree in Delhi.
Mishra began his career in the film industry as an assistant director and scriptwriter. He worked on notable films such as "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron" (1983) directed by Kundan Shah, "Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!" (1984) directed by Saeed Akhtar Mirza, and "Khamosh" (1985) directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
In 1987, Mishra made his directorial debut with the film "Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin," which won the National Film Award for Best First Film of a Director. He continued to direct films such as "Dharavi" (1991), "Main Zinda Hoon" (1988), "Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin" (1996), "Chameli" (2003), and the critically acclaimed "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi" (2005), which focused on the Naxalite movement in India. He also directed "Khoya Khoya Chand" (2007), "Yeh Saali Zindagi" (2011), "Inkaar" (2013), and the modern adaptation of "Devdas" titled "Daas Dev" (2018).
In addition to his work in films, Mishra has also ventured into the realm of web series. He directed the Indian adaptation of the popular Israeli show "Hostages," which received critical acclaim for the performances of actors Ronit Roy and Tisca Chopra. Mishra also directed the film adaptation of Manu Joseph's novel "Serious Men" in collaboration with Bombay Fables for Netflix India. The film, released in 2020, garnered positive reviews from critics and viewers alike, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui receiving accolades for his performance.
