Sooraj R. Barjatya is an Indian film director, producer, screenwriter, and distributor known for his work in Hindi cinema. He was born on February 22, 1965, and is currently the chairman of Rajshri Productions, an Indian media conglomerate founded by his late grandfather Tarachand Barjatya in 1947.
Barjatya began his career as an assistant director to Mahesh Bhatt and made his directorial debut with the blockbuster hit "Maine Pyar Kiya" in 1989. The film, a romantic musical about friendship, starred Salman Khan and was a commercial success. It also earned Barjatya the Most Sensational Debut of the Year award.
He followed up with another highly successful film, "Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!" in 1994, which became the most commercially successful Indian film of all time at that point. The film, a wedding celebration drama, received widespread acclaim and sold over 7 crore tickets during its box office run. It had the highest estimated admissions for any Hindi film since "Sholay" in 1975. This film was produced by his father, Rajkumar Barjatya, for Rajshri Productions.
In 1999, Barjatya directed the commercially and critically successful film "Hum Saath-Saath Hain," which was another blockbuster of the '90s. He continued his successful streak with films like "Vivah" (2006), which established Shahid Kapoor as a leading actor in Bollywood.
In 2015, Barjatya collaborated with Salman Khan once again for the film "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo," which became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. It earned approximately ₹400 crore worldwide at that time.
After a hiatus of nine years, Barjatya returned to direction with the film "Uunchai" in 2022. It is a film centered around friendship and features Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, and Parineeti Chopra.
