Director
Penmetsa Ram Gopal Varma, commonly known as RGV, is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He has worked in Telugu cinema as well as Hindi and Kannada language films, along with television. Varma is recognized for his diverse filmography, spanning multiple genres, including parallel cinema and docudrama, known for their gritty realism, technical finesse, and craftsmanship. He is considered one of the pioneers of new age Indian cinema and was featured in the BBC World series "Bollywood Bosses" in 2004.
Varma began his career as a civil engineer but made his entry into Telugu cinema with the groundbreaking crime thriller "Siva" in 1989. The film was featured at the 13th IFFI' 90 Indian Panorama mainstream section and earned Varma several accolades, including the state Nandi Awards for Best Direction, Best First Film of a Director, and the Filmfare Award for Best Film - Telugu. "Siva" is also listed in CNN-IBN's compilation of 100 greatest Indian films of all time.
Following the success of "Siva," Varma directed "Kshana Kshanam" in 1991, a neo-noir heist film that won him another Nandi Award for Best Direction and the Nandi Award for Best Screenplay Writer. His 1993 political drama "Gaayam" received six state Nandi Awards, and in 1999, he directed "Prema Katha," which earned him his third Nandi Award for Best Director.
Varma is known for his pan-Indian works, where he casts actors from various regions of the country. He has directed and presented the Indian Political Trilogy and the Indian Gangster Trilogy, which have been labeled by film critic Rajeev Masand as some of the most influential movies in Indian cinema. The first installment of the political trilogy, "Satya," is also listed in CNN-IBN's 100 greatest Indian films of all time. Varma received the National Film Award for scripting the political crime drama "Shool" in 1999.
Some of Varma's recent notable works include "Rakta Charitra" (2010), a dramatized re-enactment of "Rayalaseema factionism," "The Attacks of 26/11" (2013), based on the 2008 Mumbai attacks, "Killing Veerappan" (2016), depicting "Operation Cocoon," "Vangaveeti" (2016), which explores the "Vijayawada riots," "Lakshmi's NTR" (2019), centered around N. T. Rama Rao, and "Konda" (2022), focusing on Konda politics.
