During the 1970s and 1980s, Rakesh Roshan transitioned from acting to filmmaking. He started his career as an assistant director to filmmaker Mohan Kumar and made his acting debut in the 1970 film Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani in a supporting role. While he appeared in a few solo hero films, his success primarily came from supporting roles and multi-star cast films.
In 1980, Rakesh Roshan established his own production company called Filmkraft. Their first production, Aap Ke Deewane (1980), was a box office flop. However, his next venture as a producer, Kaamchor, became a hit, largely attributed to its music and the performance of the lead actress Jaya Prada. He also had success with the film Shubh Kaamna, directed by K. Vishwanath.
Roshan attempted to re-launch himself as a lead hero with the film Bhagwaan Dada (1986), in which he appeared as the second lead alongside Rajinikanth. However, the film failed to perform well at the box office. After that, he mostly took on supporting roles, with a few exceptions. His last film as a lead hero was Bahurani (1989), a woman-oriented film starring Rekha in the lead role.
Rakesh Roshan's contributions to the film industry as a producer, director, and actor have left a significant impact, and his films continue to be remembered and appreciated by audiences.
