Govind Nihalani, born on December 19, 1940, is a prominent figure in Indian cinema, known for his contributions as a film director, cinematographer, screenwriter, and producer. He has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including six National Film Awards and five Bollywood Filmfare Awards.
Nihalani gained recognition when his script for the film "Drohkaal" was adapted by Kamal Haasan for the Tamil remake "Kuruthipunal." The film went on to become India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 68th Academy Awards.
His directorial debut came with the film "Aakrosh," starring Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, and Amrish Puri. The film, scripted by renowned Marathi playwright Vijay Tendulkar, won the Golden Peacock for Best Film at the International Film Festival of India in 1981. Another notable directorial work of Nihalani is "Ardh Satya," which depicted the nexus between the police, politicians, and criminals. It received critical acclaim for its portrayal of social issues. Additionally, he adapted Mahasweta Devi's novel "Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa" into a film in 1997.
Nihalani's journey in the film industry began as a cinematographer. He graduated in cinematography from the Shree Jaya Chamrajendra Polytechnic (now known as the Government Film and Television Institute) in Bangalore in 1962. He worked as an assistant cinematographer to the legendary V. K. Murthy and was associated with films by acclaimed director Shyam Benegal. Notably, Nihalani worked as a cinematographer on Richard Attenborough's Oscar-winning film "Gandhi." Both Nihalani and Benegal are known for their socially relevant films.
Born in Karachi, Sindh province (now in Pakistan), Nihalani's family migrated to India during the partition of 1947. His early experiences and collaboration with influential figures in the industry shaped his career and artistic sensibilities.
