Vineet Kumar Singh is an Indian actor and writer born on August 28, 1978, in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He comes from a Rajput family and had a keen interest in sports, particularly basketball, in which he played at the national level. Vineet initially wanted to join the National School of Drama, but due to parental pressure and societal norms, he pursued a career in medicine.
He obtained his Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine, and Surgery degree from R. A. Podar Ayurved Medical College and went on to earn an MD (Doctor of Medicine) in Ayurveda from Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur. Vineet is a licensed medical practitioner and had a successful career in the field.
However, his passion for acting led him to Mumbai, where he participated in the Superstars Talent Hunt. He won the competition, which caught the attention of actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar, who offered him a role in the film "Pitaah" starring Sanjay Dutt. Despite the film's poor reception, Vineet faced difficulties in securing further roles.
He then worked as an associate/assistant director for Mahesh Manjrekar in films like "Viruddh" (2005) and "Deh." In 2007, Vineet decided to focus solely on acting. He appeared in Bhojpuri serials and had minor roles in films like "Gori Tere Pyaar Mein" and "Isaaq." However, his breakthrough came with the Hindi-Marathi bilingual film "City of Gold" (2010).
Director Anurag Kashyap cast Vineet in the role of Danish Khan in "Gangs of Wasseypur," which further established his presence in the industry. He went on to act in films like "Ugly" and "Bombay Talkies" (2013). Vineet's performance in "Ugly" earned him a Screen nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in commercials for Birla Sunlife and 7up Nimbooz.
In 2016, Vineet acted opposite Raima Sen in the film "Bollywood Diaries," directed by K.D. Satyam. However, his breakthrough as a lead actor came with Anurag Kashyap's film "Mukkabaaz" (2018), in which he portrayed the role of an aspiring boxer named Shravan Kumar Singh. Vineet underwent intense training for two years to prepare for the role. His performance in "Mukkabaaz" earned him critical acclaim and he won two awards for his portrayal.
Vineet also gained appreciation for his role as Milan Shukla in the film "Daas Dev," directed by Sudhir Mishra. He appeared in Akshay Kumar's "Gold" (2018) and was signed as the main lead in the film "Aadhaar" alongside Prithvi Hatte.
In 2019, Vineet had a supporting role in "Saand Ki Aankh," and he has upcoming projects such as the biopic "Gunjan Saxena" co-starring Janhvi Kapoor, as well as a Hindi remake of the Tamil film "Thiruttu Payale 2" opposite Urvashi Rautela.
Vineet Singh received the Best Actor (male) award at the Critics Choice Film Awards 2019 for his performance in "Mukkabaaz." He was also nominated for the Best Actor (Critics) award at the 64th Filmfare Awards for the same film.
