Amala Akkineni (née Mukherjee) is an Indian actress, Bharatanatyam dancer, and animal welfare activist. She was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, to a Bengali Indian Navy officer and an Irish mother. She has a brother. Amala holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Bharatanatyam from Kalakshetra college of fine arts, Madras now Chennai. She gave many live performances worldwide. She is fluent in English, Tamil and Telugu, and can understand Bengali.
Amala began her acting career in 1986 with the Tamil film "Apoorva Sagodharargal". She went on to star in several successful Tamil films, including "Pushpak", "Gharshana", and "Shiva". She also appeared in a number of Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada-language films. In 1992, Amala married Telugu actor Nagarjuna Akkineni. The couple has two sons, Naga Chaitanya and Akhil Akkineni.
Amala Akkineni is a strong advocate for animal welfare. She is the co-founder of the Blue Cross of Hyderabad, an animal welfare organization that works to protect stray animals and prevent cruelty to animals. She is also a member of the PETA India advisory board.
