Shalini Saraswathi is an extraordinary Indian sportsperson who faced immense challenges and overcame them to become a remarkable blade runner. Despite losing both her hands and legs to a rare bacterial infection after returning from Cambodia, Shalini displayed immense courage and resilience throughout her journey.
In 2013, while pregnant with her first child, Shalini fell ill and was diagnosed with a severe case of Rickettsial with morts, which eventually led to the loss of her baby. She fought through the illness, even when gangrene attacked her left arm, resulting in its amputation. A few months later, her right hand also had to be amputated. The battle wasn't over yet as gangrene affected her legs, leading to their amputation as well. However, Shalini refused to give up.
With the help of prosthetic legs, Shalini embarked on the challenging path of rehabilitation. After months of determination and hard work, she took her first steps in December 2014. But Shalini wanted to prove to herself and the world that she was capable of more than just walking.
She started training under coach BP Aiyappa and dedicated herself to intense practice and workouts. After two years of relentless effort, she began running half marathons. Shalini's goal was to regain control of her body and prove that she could overcome the challenges she had faced during her illness.
Throughout her journey, Shalini received unwavering support from her husband, Prashanth Chowdappa. Despite the excruciating pain she endured during treatments, he stood by her side and remained hopeful.
Having rediscovered her passion for running, Shalini now participates in marathons and aspires to compete in races worldwide. She finds motivation and strength while running, and it has become a symbol of her victory over adversity.
