Harsha Bhogle is an Indian cricket commentator and journalist. He was born on July 19, 1961, in Hyderabad, India. Bhogle comes from a Marathi-speaking family, and his parents are A.D. Bhogle, a professor of French language, and Shalini Bhogle, a professor of psychology. His mother's family originally hails from Lahore, and they migrated to India during the partition in 1947.
Bhogle attended Hyderabad Public School and went on to earn a B.Tech. degree in chemical engineering from Osmania University's College of Technology. He later obtained a PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management), which is largely equivalent to an MBA, from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
Early in his career, Bhogle played cricket at the A Div level in Hyderabad and represented Osmania University in the Rohinton Baria Tournament. He began his commentary journey at the age of 19 with All India Radio while residing in Hyderabad. In 1991-92, he became the first Indian commentator to be invited by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation for India's cricket series before the 1992 Cricket World Cup. He went on to work for ABC Radio Grandstand during India's Australian tours and spent eight years as part of the BBC's commentary team for the 1996 and 1999 Cricket World Cups.
Since 1995, Bhogle has been presenting live cricket from all around the world for ESPN STAR Sports. He has covered numerous Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons since 2009. Bhogle has also hosted various television programs such as "Harsha Online," "Harsha Unplugged," and "School Quiz Olympiad" for ESPN and Star Sports. He has a significant online presence and hosts a show called "Out of the Box with Harsha Bhogle" on YouTube.
Bhogle has been recognized as a popular cricket commentator, and he was voted the favorite TV cricket commentator by Cricinfo users in a worldwide poll. Apart from cricket commentary, he has anchored programs like BBC's travel serial "Travel India" and Business Today's Acumen Business Quiz and Debate competitions.
In addition to his broadcasting career, Bhogle has been involved with the Mumbai Indians IPL team as an advisor in 2008. He has authored several books, including a biography of Mohammad Azharuddin and a collection of columns titled "Out of the Box - Watching the Game We Love." Bhogle has also hosted pre and post-match shows for major cricket events like the 2011 World Cup.
Bhogle's career hit a bump in 2016 when he was dropped from the IPL commentary team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) due to alleged criticism from Indian players. However, he continued to contribute to cricket coverage through his association with Cricbuzz, where he writes articles and provides video analyses.
On the personal front, Bhogle is married to Anita, his classmate from IIM Ahmedabad. They reside in Mumbai and have two adult sons. Bhogle has been a vegetarian since the age of 17. He and his wife run a sport-based communication consultancy called Prosearch.
