Bhaichung Bhutia, born on December 15, 1976, is a former Indian professional footballer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players in the country's history. He played as a striker and is considered a trailblazer for Indian football on the international stage.
Bhutia earned the nickname "Sikkimese Sniper" due to his exceptional shooting skills in football. He made significant contributions to the development and popularity of the sport in India. He is often hailed as God's gift to Indian football by his peers, including fellow footballer I. M. Vijayan.
Bhutia had four stints with the renowned Indian football club East Bengal, where he started his career. In 1999, he created history by becoming the first Indian footballer to sign a contract with a European club, joining English club Bury. He also had a brief loan spell with the Malaysian club Perak FA. Bhutia represented other Indian clubs such as JCT Mills and Mohun Bagan during his career.
On the international stage, Bhutia achieved notable success. He won several tournaments including the Nehru Cup, LG Cup, SAFF Championship (three times), and the AFC Challenge Cup. With 80 international caps, he is the second most capped player in Indian football history. Bhutia scored his first international goal at the age of 18 years and 90 days, becoming India's second youngest international goal scorer.
