His father, Belawadi Nanjundaiah Narayan, and mother, Bhargavi Narayan, were both prominent figures in Kannada theatre and cinema.

Belawadi's educational journey led him to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering from University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in 1983. However, his true passion lay in the arts, and he carved out a significant career in theatre, film, and media.

He made his mark in the film industry with his debut film "Stumble," which he wrote and directed. The film achieved great recognition, winning the National Award for Best Film in the English language in 2003.
