Kabir Khan is an acclaimed Indian film director, screenwriter, and cinematographer known for his work in Hindi cinema. He began his career in documentary filmmaking and made his directorial debut in 2006 with the film "Kabul Express." Khan is best known for directing films such as "Ek Tha Tiger" (2012) and "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" (2015). His latest release as of the information cutoff date in 2021 is the film "83," which tells the story of India's historic victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup.
Khan was born to a mixed-religion family, with his father being a Muslim Urdu-speaking Pathan and his mother a Hindu Telugu-speaking woman. His father, Rasheeduddin Khan, was a prominent political science professor and a nephew of Dr. Zakir Hussain, who served as the President of India from 1967 to 1969. Khan's sister is married to filmmaker Vijay Krishna Acharya, known for directing films like "Tashan" and "Dhoom 3."
He pursued his education at Kirori Mal College of Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. Khan is married to television host and actress Mini Mathur, and they have two children together.
Khan's career began as a cinematographer for the documentary film "Beyond the Himalayas" (1996). He then directed his own documentary, "The Forgotten Army" (1999), which focused on Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army. After directing a few more documentaries, Khan shifted his focus to mainstream cinema.
His directorial debut, "Kabul Express," backed by Yash Raj Films, won him the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the 54th National Film Awards. He continued his collaboration with Yash Raj Films, directing films like "New York" and "Ek Tha Tiger," which brought him mainstream success.
After completing his three-film deal with Yash Raj Films, Khan established his own production company and ventured into screenwriting. His film "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" became his most successful work to date, earning critical acclaim and becoming the sixth highest-grossing Indian film worldwide. The film also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
Khan has explored various genres and subjects in his films. He directed "Phantom" (2015), based on the 26/11 attacks, and "Tubelight" (2017), an official remake of the American film "Little Boy" set during the 1962 Sino-Indian war. In 2019, he released his first web series, "The Forgotten Army: Azaadi Ke Liye," on Amazon Prime Video.
Khan's upcoming project is "The Zookeeper," a Sino-Indian production that is a travel-related drama film being shot in Chengdu, China. Additionally, he directed the film "83" in 2021, which received critical acclaim for its depiction of India's historic cricket victory.
Despite the critical acclaim for "83," the film's box office performance was not as successful as anticipated. It was made on a budget of ₹270 crore but only grossed ₹190.86 crore worldwide, making it commercially underwhelming.
