Ayan Mukerji is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer known for his work in Hindi cinema. He made his directorial debut with the film "Wake Up Sid" in 2009, a coming-of-age comedy that received positive reviews and performed well at the box office. His next film, "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" in 2013, a romantic comedy-drama starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time.
Mukerji then directed "Brahmāstra: Part One - Shiva," a fantasy action-adventure released in 2022. It stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy, Nagarjuna Akkineni, and Amitabh Bachchan. The film is the first installment of a planned trilogy called the Astraverse. "Brahmāstra: Part One - Shiva" was a commercial success and emerged as the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022, earning over ₹431 crore (US$54 million) worldwide.
As of April 2023, Mukerji has upcoming projects in the pipeline. He is set to direct "War 2," which is part of the YRF Spy Universe. Additionally, he will be directing the second and third installments of the "Brahmāstra" trilogy, titled "Brahmа̄stra: Part Two - Dev" and "Brahmāstra: Part Three," respectively.
Ayan Mukerji comes from a prominent Mukherjee-Samarth family of Indian cinema. His grandfather, Sashadhar Mukherjee, was a pioneering film producer, and his grandmother, Satidevi Mukherjee, was the sister of actor Ashok Kumar and singer Kishore Kumar. Ayan's father's brothers and his grandfather's brothers were also involved in the film industry, either as actors or producers.
Mukerji began his career as an assistant to Ashutosh Gowariker on the film "Swades" and later worked with Karan Johar on "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna." He gained recognition as a filmmaker with the success of "Wake Up Sid" and has continued to make an impact with his subsequent projects
