Gopalakrishnan gained prominence with the release of his debut feature film, "Swayamvaram" in 1972. This film marked the beginning of the new wave movement in Malayalam cinema, introducing a fresh and realistic approach to storytelling. Throughout his career spanning over five decades, Gopalakrishnan has directed only 12 feature films, each capturing the essence of Kerala's society and culture.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has established the Adoor Gopalakrishnan Film Archive and Research Center, which houses an extensive collection of his films, providing research students with access to 35mm prints of his feature films and documentaries.
