Jaswinder Bhalla, born on May 4, 1960, is an Indian actor and comedian known for his work in Punjabi cinema. He began his career as a comedian in 1988 with the comedy series "Chhankata 88" and later made his acting debut in the film "Dulla Bhatti." Bhalla gained popularity for his comedy roles in various Punjabi films and his comedy series "Chhankata." He is recognized for his use of taglines in movies, bringing a humorous touch to the films. In addition to his film and television work, he has also performed in stage acts, including tours in Canada and Australia for his stage show "Naughty Baba in Town."
Jaswinder Bhalla was born in Ludhiana, Punjab. His father, Master Bahadur Singh Bhalla, was a primary school teacher in the village of Barmalipur. He completed his basic education at Senior Secondary School Doraha. Bhalla pursued his higher education at Punjab Agricultural University, where he earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees. He later obtained his Ph.D. from Chaudhry Charan Singh University, Meerut. Bhalla initially worked as an Assistant Professor at Punjab Agricultural University and eventually became a Professor and Head of the Department of Extension Education. He retired from active service on May 31, 2020.
Bhalla's comedy career began during his time as a student at Punjab Agricultural University, where he performed comedy acts in university programs. In 1988, he started his professional career with the release of the audio cassette "Chhankata 1988," along with his co-performer Bal Mukund Sharma. The word "Chhankata" originated from the annual show performed by Bhalla and Sharma at Punjab Agricultural University. They gained recognition when they were noticed by Doordarshan Kendra, Jalandhar while performing at the Professor Mohan Singh Mela (cultural festival), with the support of Punjabi author Jagdev Singh Jassowal. Bhalla has released over 27 audio and video albums of the "Chhankata" series, with Neelu Sharma also being part of the series.
In his "Chhankata" series, Bhalla portrays various characters representing different aspects of Punjabi society. One of his notable characters is Chacha (Uncle) Chatar Singh, an elderly villager who discusses Punjab's politics, rural-urban differences, and shares jokes from different walks of life. He also portrays the character of Bhana, a young man from Chatar Singh's village who has migrated to the USA and appears as an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) in the "Chhankata" series. Bhalla's other popular characters include JB, the son of Chatar Singh, and Taya Fumhan Singh.
In addition to his comedy career, Jaswinder Bhalla has worked in Punjabi feature films such as "Mahaul Theek Hai," "Jija Ji," "Jihne Mera Dil Luteya," "Power Cut," "Kabaddi Once Again," "Apan Phir Milange," "Mel Kara De Rabba," "Carry On Jatta," "Jatt and Juliet," and "Jatt Airways." He often incorporates different taglines and humorous dialogues in his films, using his art to highlight social issues like female foeticide, drug abuse, and unemployment.
Bhalla has been involved in a few controversies throughout his career. In his album "Chhankata 2003," he faced criticism from certain ragi jathas (religious singers) who claimed he was mocking them. He later issued an apology along with the album's artists
