Avijit Dutt is an Indian filmmaker, actor, theater director, and communications consultant based in Kolkata. He holds a master's degree in English Literature from Calcutta University and began his career as an English faculty member at St. Paul's School in Darjeeling.
Dutt has an extensive background as a theater director and actor, having been involved in over 100 plays in English, Hindi, and Bengali. He has written six full-length plays, including "Bamboo Flower," "Mahatma Mar Gaya," "Bombay! Bosnia!," "Breaking News," "Noor Jahan - An Empress Reveals," and "Unspeakable - 9.45 ki Express ki Citee." He has also adapted Mahasweta Devi's "1084 ki Ma" into a dramatic production in collaboration with Shyamanand Jalan.
One of Dutt's notable achievements is his involvement in launching Childline with UNICEF and the National Human Rights Commission. Childline is a helpline for children in distress, providing support and assistance to vulnerable children across India.
In addition to his theater and social work, Avijit Dutt has made appearances in Hollywood movies such as "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love" and "Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." He has also acted in Bollywood films like "Madras Cafe" as a Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) officer, "Jolly LLB2" as a state police head, and "No One Killed Jessica" as a defense lawyer. Furthermore, he has been part of several web series on platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Dutt's contributions extend beyond the entertainment industry. He is known for his innovative ideas and holds two patents, one for a toilet solution and another for a process of collecting, testing, and documenting blood tests for rural areas. Through his organization, Enable, where he serves as the Chief Motivator and Director, he has built toilets in northern India, benefiting over 60,000 individuals across 68 villages.
